Bayshore Health Tips

Dental Disease

Your pet can suffer severe illness as a result of poor dental health. Bad teeth often cause pain, premature aging and damage to liver, kidneys and heart. If your pet has bad breath, discolored teeth, reddened gums of difficulty when eating, please schedule a dental check-up. We can recommend products that can help eliminate plaque from you pet’s teeth.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is the leading small animal health problem. Poor dental health can weaken your pet’s resistance to disease. By brushing your pet’s teeth daily, most gum infections can be prevented. We can give you instructions on brushing your pet’s teeth and what products to use.

Medications

Many people take over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin or Tylenol to relieve aches and pains, without any problems, and this is fine for people. However, never give any medication to your pet without checking first with your veterinarian, not even aspirin. It could be fatal to your pet. We mention this because we care about you and your pet’s health!

Geriatric care

Aging is a natural process, and we can’t stop it. Just as a person ages, your pet will slow down as it grows older. Most pet owners fail to realize their pets age more rapidly than humans. Your pet is an adult when it’s a little over a year old. By the time your pet is six years old, the aging process is advanced. Your love, understanding and patience along with proper diet and following your veterinarian’s prescribed health program are vital in helping to provide your pet with many more comfortable years.

Heart Disease

You may think it's old age, but it could be heart disease. Heart disease can rob your pet of appetite, energy and quality of life. Some signs include frequent coughing, labored breathing and decreased activity. Fortunately, heart disease can be managed. But only if you know it’s there, and that requires professional veterinary care. Don’t wait until it’s too late! Ask us to check any symptoms you notice in your pet.

Diabetes-Kidney disease

It’s always important to be aware of the kind of food and drink your pet is consuming…and how much. If your pet seems to have an excessive thirst, you should have us check it out as soon as possible. Excessive thirst can be a sign of kidney disease or diabetes. As always, we look forward to advising you on your pet’s good health.

Otitis symptoms (Ear infection)

Pets that shake their heads, rub their ears against the floor, or scratch the ear area excessively may have otitis. Otitis is an inflammation of the ear, often very painful, that can lead to hearing loss and even deafness. It’s important to have us check your pet as soon as possible.

Allergies

When we hear the words allergies and pets in the same context, we usually think of people with itchy, burning eyes and congestion due to dog or cat fur, but, did you know that pets can have allergies too? Certain house-hold cleaners and chemicals can cause skin irritation an itching for our furry friends. And believe it or not, the most common pet allergic skin reaction is flea allergy dermatitis. So, if your pet is scratching, licking or biting itself often it could be because of an allergy. Have us check these symptoms as soon as possible. Your pet will be grateful that you did.

Heartworm Transmission

Heartworm disease is the most common cardiac disease in dogs, and it occasionally infects cats and ferrets. This is the easiest heart disease to prevent. This deadly parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes. The parasite grows to the size of spaghetti in a dog’s heart, causing congestive heart failure. Extensive studies have found very little difference in the rate of infection of indoor dogs as compared to outdoor dogs where mosquitoes are present. So, all dogs who live or travel where mosquitoes are present should be given preventive heartworm medication. All that is needed to start your pet on heartworm prevention is a routine annual blood test.

Parasites

Internal parasites are extremely common and threaten your pet’s health. Sometimes they can cause intestinal blockage, severe diarrhea, and even death in young or weakened pets. Microscopic examination is required to identify specific parasites so precise treatment can be administered. It’s important to note that over-the-counter products are risky if administered improperly. Also, these over-the-counter products do not act on all parasites your pet may have. These parasites can cause major problems if not detected and eliminated. More information and facts are available from one of our friendly professionals.

Behavior problems

Pets, like children, must be trained. We have special training aids to help you with pet behavioral problems. From jumping, running, biting, begging and obedience to accidents in the house, our years of experience with animals and proven training aids and techniques will help your pet become a pleasant companion.

Antifreeze danger

Antifreeze from your radiator has a sweet taste and odor that pets love but it can kill them! Even the environmentally safer products are still highly toxic to pets! Keep pets away and clean up any antifreeze spills or radiator overflows immediately to keep your pets safe.

Pet ID microchip

Imagine if someone killed you, just for getting lost! Millions of helpless pets without an I.D are never reunited with their owners. Microchip I.D.’s are implanted painlessly under your pet’s skin. This identification can never be lost or stolen; a quick scan reveals your pet’s vital information.

Hot weather care

Did you know pets can’t sweat like people do to cool down? They need a shady place to rest and plenty of fresh water to help protect them from heat stroke during hot weather. And never, ever, lock pets in your car! Heat stroke kills! Pet Health Tips Vets
