Oncology & Chemotherapy
Oncology is the compassionate care and treatment of the cancer patient. Once the diagnosis has been made, the tumor has been located, and the patient's condition has been evaluated, one must plan a treatment that fits the patient and their owner. Along with surgery (that also includes laser and cryotherapy) and radiation therapy, chemotherapy is one of the multiple modalities for the treatment of cancer in our pets. Examples of such malignancies are leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, mast cell tumors, osteosarcoma, and apocrine gland carcinoma.
Chemotherapy is the principal treatment for systemic cancers (those that are not localized and affect the body as a whole). Anti-cancer drugs are used to induce remission, to eliminate any resistant tumor cells, and reduce the microscopic tumor burden. The goal of all oncology is to cure cancer, if possible, and if not, to produce a delay of recurrence and improve the quality of our pets' lives and increase survival time.
